Theodore “Ted” William Zimmerman, 97, Two Harbors, died Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Ecumen Scenic Shores in Two Harbors.
He was born November 20, 1916 to George and Josephine (Drouillard) Zimmerman in Grand Portage where he grew up. He graduated from Cook County High School and then worked for the U. S. Forest Service as a fire tower watchman for a short time. In 1942, he moved to Two Harbors where he was employed by the DM&IR Railroad as a machinist until his retirement in 1981.
Ted enjoyed time with this family, fishing, hunting, woodworking and animals, especially his cats.
Ted was proud to be the oldest member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, seven sisters, his former wife, Orlaine “Jo,” and a great-grandson, Takoda.
Ted is survived by his sons Terry (Sally) of Melrose, Tim (Chris) of Monticello, Thane (Thea) of Moorhead, and Tracy (Pauline) of Grand Rapids; 15 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and his longtime companion, Prudence Johnson.
Visitation was Friday, January 31, 2014 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the spring at St. John’s Catholic Church in Grand Marais, followed by burial in Chippewa City Cemetery.
