In an effort to do all we can during this time of crisis, the Duluth Area Family YMCA (the Y) has partnered with ServeMinnesota and Reading and Math Inc. to help launch the Minnesota AmeriCorps Emergency Response Initiative. This new initiative is designed to help communities better respond to needs brought on by the COVID-19 crisis.
Starting in June, the Y will place 19 AmeriCorps members at nonprofit agencies in Duluth, Sturgeon Lake, Esko, Two Harbors, and Grand Marais. Similar efforts will occur across the state, supported by Reading and Math Inc.
These individuals will help respond to significant needs resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Activities will include emergency food distribution, public health outreach, school-age childcare support, and engaging with senior citizens and other activities to reduce the spread of the disease and increase public wellbeing.
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. This initiative not only impacts community members across Minnesota, it also provides a paid professional development opportunity for citizens during an uncertain time. Nationwide unemployment rates are nearing 18 percent. Most individuals over the age of 18 with a GED or high school diploma will qualify to serve.
Emergency Response Members will serve one term of service in a full-time capacity (35 hours per week) beginning June 8 and ending service on August 15. Benefits of serving include a living stipend, free health insurance, an education award (can be used for student loans or tuition), student loan forbearance, and professional development.
The Minnesota AmeriCorps Emergency Response Initiative is an AmeriCorps program (sometimes called the domestic Peace Corps). To learn more and apply to the positions in Greater Duluth please visit www.truenorthamericorps.org/response.
