With the regular season winding down, the CCHS girls’ basketball team faced a busy schedule, playing three games in four days.
Up first was a home game on Thursday, February 6 against the High School for Recording Arts. The St. Paul school is nicknamed “Hip Hop High”.
Cook County put up 41 first half points, building an insurmountable lead over the St. Paul school. Coach Kelly Hawsen played her bench for much of the second half and the Vikings cruised to a 58-35 win.
Three Vikings scored in double figures. Ariania Poyirier finished with 12, Abbie Crawford 11, and Paisley Smith had 11 points. Alyssa Spry ended with seven points, Katie Peck six, Anna Hay four, Kamryn Johnson three, and Makenzie Fairbanks netted two points in the contest.
With the win the Vikings evened their record at six wins and six losses.
Vikings vs. Barnum
The next night, kids boarded a bus and traveled to Barnum to face the Barnum Bombers. Going into the contest Barnum had three wins and nine losses, but no matter what their record is, Barnum is always a tough game for the Vikings, and this was no different.
At the end of regulation the score was 45-45, and the teams went into overtime. In overtime, Barnum was able to score nine points while holding the Vikings to seven, taking the 54-52 win in a hard fought game.
Ariana Poyirier, 19, and Rhonnie Poyitier, 13, led the Vikings in scoring. Abbie Crawford finished with 10, Paisley Smith four, Katie Peck four, and Alyssa Spy had two points in the contest.
Alil Marine, 21,and Mackenzee Schleret, 19, led the Barnum Bombers in points.
Vikings vs. Silver Bay
On February 11 the team took a short ride to Silver Bay to play the 1-9 Mariners and took the win 74-36.
Abby Crawford led the Vikings in scoring with 18 points. Ariana Poyirier was right behind with 16 points, Rhonnie Poyirier had 15, Katie Peck 9, Paisley Smith 8, Alyssa Spry 4, and Mackenzie Fairbanks had two points in the game.
The Vikings are currently seventh in conference play, ahead of 12 teams in the 19 team Polar League.
The Cook County High School girls’ basketball regular season is winding down, with two games left on the schedule before playoffs start. A home game against the Esko Eskimos on Friday, February 14 and a home game against the Nashwauk-Keewatin Spartans scheduled for February 21 is all that is left before Section play begins.
