A Tofte citizen tells a pretty good wolf story, (actual experience) which throughout the season, is worth repeating.
While walking through the woods one day late in the winter he was startled by the sudden appearance upon his trail of a vicious bull moose.
As the animal showed a very decided inclination to become better acquainted with him, he decided without wasting much time debating the question with himself to get into the high branches of the nearest tree as fast as possible, and he did so.
The moose came up and pawed madly at the base of the tree and then leisurely took a walk around, as if determined to “stand by” and await developments.
It was a cold and stormy day, and the man in the tree was considering whether it was best to freeze to death or tackle the moose, when he heard the howling of a pack of wolves coming near.
Mr. moose did not tarry longer but made off into the woods. The pack, following the scent, went on in the direction taken by the moose. When the sounds had died away in the distance the man came down from his perch and hurried home. He thanks the ferocious pack of wolves for his timely escape from a perilous predicament.
Do you have a good short story (250-350 words) you wish to share with readers about an uncommon outdoor adventure that went somewhat awry? Or an outing where you had an unusual encounter with an animal(s), bird or fish? If so, email it to ccnh@boreal.org.
