The Ladies Music Club, an acoustic group of five women from St. Paul, is coming to the Gunflint Trail on the group’s first road trip. They will be performing at Hungry Jack Lodge from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday, July 31 and at Gunflint Lodge from 7 – 9 p.m. on August 1. Admission is free and weather permitting they will be on the patio at Gunflint Lodge.
The Ladies Music Club features three-part harmony, two guitars, string bass and violin – playing a wide range of lovely easy listening folk and bluegrass style music. Music on the set list will be from familiar favorites like Minnesota native Ann Reed to John Prine and Emmylou Harris as well as some eclectic stylings from contemporary songs of Liz Phair and Brit Frank Turner.
The singers have been performing in their current form for a year, but band members have been playing together in different combinations for well over five years.
Spokesperson Meredith Leary Johnson is the “Gunflint connection” for the women as her in-laws, Peggy and Lindsay Little, now live at midtrail. Leary Johnson said her family has grown a fondness for the beautiful area and the kind hospitality.
“Like all great ladies clubs, this iteration has deep roots – singer and guitarist Barb Burk was the preschool teacher for all three of singer Sara Birkeland’s children!
“Barb and Burna Krugler are sisters and like most sibling pairs, have a beautiful sound together. Adding tremendous talent and style is Kelsey Lee Long on violin. She played professionally throughout Ireland and now is the principal violinist of a community orchestra in Saint Paul,” said Leary Johnson.
That is where she met Meredith Leary Johnson on string bass.
Reaching out to Hungry Jack and Gunflint lodges felt like a natural extension of the vibe The Ladies Music Club is used to, having performed in many of the coffee cafés of Saint Paul, such as Dunn Bros, Amore, Trotters, Claddagh and others.
Their acoustic styling of music is family friendly and pairs well with a great beverage and fond company.
