The Johnny Cash Story is coming to Grand Portage Lodge and Casino on Saturday, November 15, in the form of the talented rockabilly musician Sherwin Linton.

Sherwin Linton began playing the guitar and singing cowboy songs in the 1940s and had his own show on KWAT Radio in Watertown, South Dakota in 1955. Through the years, Sherwin’s career grew as he traveled with his band throughout the United States, performing his original songs and a variety of other styles plus a vast repertoire of Cash hits.

Having grown up in rural South Dakota and always living near the railroad where his father worked, Sherwin’s life had somewhat paralleled that of Johnny Cash. In another similarity in 1971, Linton performed a concert inside the granite walls of the South Dakota State Penitentiary, as Cash did at San Quentin. Linton’s concert, which included his own songs as well as a 25-minute tribute to Johnny Cash, became a live album titled, Hello, I’m Not Johnny Cash.

That album led to CMA and Music City News nominations for Country Entertainer of the Year Awards in 1972-73. But the biggest accomplishment for the talented Linton was an endorsement by Johnny Cash himself. Cash sent him a complimentary letter and the men became friends, with Sherwin performing with Cash frequently.

The Johnny Cash Show includes a talented group of musicians including Linton’s beautiful wife Pam who joins him on stage to sing songs of June Carter and the Carter Family.

Head to the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino Saturday night for this fantastic show. Tickets are $15 at the door. Call (218) 475-2401 for more information.
