Now that the deed is done, maybe we should consider what was lost. We may commend the students for their efforts to acknowledge and pay tribute to indigenous people by requesting a celebratory day. There is less gain, however, when replacing an established day that recognized a historical person, Columbus, and more benefit with the creation of a new holiday based on some chosen aspect of indigenous peoples.
We distort and go astray when we either demonize or glorify and idolize any person (Columbus, Madison, Jefferson, Jesus), or when we suggest that Columbus Day only praises his accomplishments. I only learned about some of his cruel and terrible choices through Columbus Day. We could lose sight of significant history if we try to erase Columbus Day.
