The Playhouse ended the school year with a wonderful production of The Tempest and finished the run with the awarding of the annual Excellence in Theater Arts Award to graduating seniors that have contributed significantly to the life of the local theater. This year’s recipients are Sylvia Berka, Saira Smith, Izy Sparks and Abbey Stoddard. Congratulations and best wishes on your path forward!

As soon as school is out, the Playhouse will be jumping into the summer camp season with four theater camps held throughout the summer. The first is for students moving into Grades 3-5 and will be held June 2-18, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. The group will create the play The Snow Queen’s Revenge on Hercules by Hayley Cotton. Hercules has stolen the Snow Queen’s magical ice horses and she wants revenge. She teams up with Hera, and they hatch an evil plot. They trick Hercules into going on a date with his girlfriend. Only his girlfriend is now a bewitching ice sculpture that will freeze Hercules until the end of time! Students will love playing fairy tale characters, mythological figures and animals in this delightful mixed-up fairy tale!

Next will be a Camp for Youth moving into grades 6-8 that runs June 21- July 2, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Perstephanie Goes Underground by Elizabeth Rapoza. Perstephanie Goes Underground is the comedic retelling of Persephone, the young Greek Goddess of Spring. In this story, Perstephanie takes a job in the Underworld in hopes of gaining more freedom and respect from her mother. However, things don’t turn out as she planned, and Perstephanie learns that you can’t always go home. It is an excellent introduction to the Greek myths and their view of the changing of the seasons and the afterlife.

The third camp will be a playwriting camp for students in grades 6-8 July 5-16, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Youth will go from concept to stage with their original works!

Lastly, August 9-20, Youth in grades 3-8 will create a large production! The Dragon and the Pearl by August Mergelman. The Dragon and the Pearl is a Chinese Theatre play. Thanks to one naughty little monkey, two folktales become inextricably tangled. The first centers around Pearl. With both a wicked stepmother and stepsister to boss her around, she’s a regular Cinderella story; her fairy godmother, however, is more of a benevolent dragon. The second tale centers around a natural pearl—the Imperial Pearl. After the monkey steals it from the palace, the emperor sends his sons, San and Ping, to retrieve it from the clutches of the evil dragon.

All summer camps are $400, with some scholarships available. Find more information and register at grandmaraisplayhouse.com.

If you would like to sponsor a camper, you can do so at the Playhouse website ticket page. Please help us keep theater education accessible!

To assist with the camps, the Playhouse is looking for two assistants to hire for the summer. Applications are available by contacting sue@grandmaraisplayhouse.com. Auditions!

The Grand Marais Playhouse is holding auditions for The Birthday Club by Phil Olson, on June 7 at 7 p.m. There are roles for five women. Rehearsals will be Monday – Thursday 6-8 p.m. (or adjusted by participants). The Birthday Club is a comedy where five women get together for their birthdays, each with her own story, to drink, celebrate, commiserate, and support each other as they negotiate through marriage, work, divorce, birth and kids, while solving the problems of the world.
