Thanksgiving Poem

Let’s give thanks to Mother Nature
whose breasts we suckle when first we’re born
to whom we listen with attentive ear
on how to walk and talk
whose tight embrace we one day leave
to embrace the world all on our own

She waves farewell with tear-marred face
while we stand by unmoved
convince ourselves only up we’ll grow
without a Mother’s care

Her love’s concern we’ll must forsake
for sake of self concern
and choose a life to call our own
to life to live alone

Acknowledge we now how utterly barren
our self-centered lives gone astray
question ourselves how can it be
why the world has lost its sense
concede we must our arrogance
when we do not live as Mother Nature taught
confess the distress we inflict upon Her
beg Her forgive as only mothers give

Calling to mind
as our thanks we render
empty are words
when not from the heart they flow
acts of thanks naught
when only for the self they grow
