The Cook County Tennis Association (CCTA) held its fourth annual three-day tennis camp last week to a record number of youth. Travel Tennis Camps Inc, a Minnesota organization that specializes in putting on tennis camps in towns throughout Minnesota during the summer, again provided instruction. The camp is held at the Grand Marais courts and is open to both youth and adults with some tennis experience who want to improve their games.
Except for a short rain delay, the weather was perfect for the 13 enthusiastic kids who participated this year. Over the three days, they received 15 hours of professional instruction on all aspects of the game of tennis, which are taught through a series of fun on-court drills and match play situations. Scott Hansen, the head women’s tennis coach at the College of St. Benedict, led the instructors. Every year Scott brings college level players to assist him. This year he brought two current players from the College of St. Catherine and Macalester College tennis teams.
The following youth attended the camp this year: Wren Ferry, Anna Heeren, Weston Heeren, Amery Obery, Eric Oberg, Grant Oberg, Titus Piepho, Hazel Oberholtzer, Cy Oberholtzer, Paavo Rova, Tuuli Rova, Ella Sporn, and Rio Tersteeg. Due to the continued positive response from the participants, the CCTA plans to offer the camp again in 2018.
