Tennis Block Party kicks off tennis season

Sophie Eliasen enjoyed hitting some tennis balls during the “Scramble” activity at the 2009 Cook County Tennis Block Party May 2 in Grand Marais.

The Cook County Tennis Association held its annual Cook County Tennis Block Party Saturday, May 2, at the Cook County public tennis courts. This was also part of a nationwide celebration of Tennis Month (May). Fifty participants enjoyed the fun tennis activities, free barbecue lunch, and prizes, despite some cooler temperatures.

Kathy Bolstad started things off by leading the whole group of participants through some fun, active racquet and ball skills, while everyone kept moving. Then the participants were divided into a couple different groups, based on skill level, and had an opportunity to learn and participate in several enjoyable tennis activities The activities included: The Rallying Game, Scramble, 21 Game, Monkey in the Middle, and Two Ball – One Ball (Dingles). The last court activity involved everyone hitting for prizes.

After the court activities, everyone enjoyed a free barbecue lunch and listened to some information about spring and summer tennis programs and the upcoming tennis court construction project. The enjoyable tennis block party concluded with a drawing for door prizes. Caleb Phillips won the grand prize adult tennis racquet, donated by John Muus.

Other nice prizes, including gift certificates, were provided by Kathy Bolstad, USTA Northern, USTA National, the Lake Superior Trading Post, the Blue Water Café, Sven & Ole’s, the Dairy Queen, and the Cook County Tennis Association.
