There was a packed house last week at the Cook County Tennis Association’s annual meeting held at the Raven Rock restaurant at Skyport Lodge.

After a social hour and dinner, CCTA President, Bill Hennessy, opened the meeting with some welcoming remarks. Dick Swanson, Bill Thomas, Mike Carlson, Jennifer Plahuta and Bill Hennessy followed with brief updates on the organization’s finances, summer programs, facilities, membership and fundraising. All were very positive reports.

Although there were many highlights from the past year, two stood out thanks to the efforts of John Muus, Megan Rubbelke and Charley Darley. First was the addition of the new sport of POP tennis to the CCTA weekly on-court programs and to the Cook County school physical education curricula. And second was the significant expansion of the youth tennis after school and summer instructional offerings. Both represent major milestones for the CCTA and will help grow the participation and enjoyment of the lifelong sport of tennis in the Cook County community.

Other business included the election of three new members (Kyle Oberg, Bob Gordon, Marcela Perez-Abreu) and six renewing members (Mike Carlson, Dick Swanson, Bill Thomas, Butch Piepho, Marcia Cushmore, Jennifer Plahuta) to the CCTA board of directors.

Bill Hennessy awarded Bill Thomas the President’s Certificate of Appreciation for his many contributions to the CCTA as program director. Mike Goldammer, the executive director at the United States Tennis Association’s Northern Branch, concluded the meeting with an excellent presentation on the current state of the U.S. and the many USTA programs that are contributing to the rising world ranking of our men and women tennis players.
