Taylor DeBoer places 8th at Ely sled dog race

Taylor DeBoer, age 14, is turning into a fine sled dog racer. After her 8th-place finish in Ely her mom, Andrea said, “I am pretty proud of her! She had to deal with a lot of passing on the trail and she pushed through all by herself and had a great time.” Photo courtesy of Jim Stronger

With winter full on in all of her fluffy white glory, area mushers have been rejoicing and traveling to dogsled races and having quite a bit of success.

This past weekend at the Wolf Tracks race in Ely, Taylor DeBoer of Grand Marais, only 14 years old and in her first real race, placed eighth in the 6-dog class in a very competitive field of 31 teams.

Frank Moe of Moetown Kennels in Hovland was third in the 8-dog class.

After the race Frank made the observation that, “Crossing Windy Lake in Bear Head State Park reminded me of crossing Devil Track, no trail and (lots of) wind. I guess that’s why they call it Windy Lake.

“As always it was a great race with over 40 teams participating,” added Frank.

This weekend is the Copper Dog. Local mushers Frank Moe, Mary Manning of Hovland and Rita Wehseler of Tofte are entered in the 10-dog class. Andrea DeBoer of Grand Marais will be racing in the 8-dog class.
