Tax help again offered

Volunteers will again help the community with federal, state and property tax refund preparations.

Last year at Grand Marais and Grand Portage, 464 tax returns were processed for taxpayers of Cook County; most (97 percent) were e-filed without the need to mail in returns.

Help was even offered with previous year’s returns by amending, with corrections, previous returns.

Help is also available for U.S. tax returns for Canadians working in the U.S., and even for Canadians who have won big at Grand Portage who need to get a refund of federal tax withheld.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 1, the tax volunteers will be at the Senior Center, 10 Broadway, Grand Marais from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Beginning Wednesday, the 3rd of February, the tax volunteers will be at the Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. And on Friday, the 5th of February, the tax volunteers will be at the Community Center in Grand Portage from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You are asked bring your Social Security card; W2 forms showing employer and income; interest (1099- INT); dividends (1099-DIV or equivalent) and retirement (1099-R); copy of last year’s federal and state tax returns; and rent refund certificate (see your landlord).

The volunteers can usually process two to four returns per hour, depending upon their difficulty. At the end of the day they electronically, over the phone lines, send out your returns to the federal and state governments for processing.
