Taryn Manthey Logan of Grand Portage completed her four years of undergraduate education at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. She, her parents, grandparents, brothers, and numerous other family attended her graduation on May 25, 2014.
Also with family members were Pastor Kris Garey of her church, Trinity Lutheran in Hovland, and Judy Hong, granddaughter of Howard and Edna Hong who established a significant scholarship to St. Olaf through Trinity Lutheran. Taryn introduced those attending to many professors, mentors, and friends around the campus. She said, “It is good to be going on to what will be next, but is also hard to be ending such a wonderful four years.”
The Arnold and Evelyn Flaten/St. Olaf Work-Camp Scholarship was initiated by the Hongs and contributed to by several other Trinity members. The scholarship is in honor of the Flatens, who helped design the Trinity church with Architect Ed Sovik. They led St. Olaf student work groups to Hovland when the church was being built in the late 1940s. It is for Trinity Lutheran Church members.
Taryn is the first recipient, and received a significant scholarship each year. At St. Olaf, a Lutheran College of the ELCA, she has seen her faith deepen, has developed leadership attributes, and has found reward in her studies and the diversity of the students. She hopes to attend an internship program in Washington, D.C., and is considering a master’s degree. Taryn says her education equipped her with open-mindedness, knowledge and analytical and critical thinking skills.
