A tanker truck left the roadway about a mile west of Cascade River and tipped onto its side late in the evening on February 20, 2014. Because of the severe weather the semi remained there until the next afternoon.

Robert Wade Love, 69, of Delta, Colorado, was driving a 2013 white Freightliner eastbound at 10:52 p.m. when he apparently got too close to the snow bank on Highway 61. He told sheriff deputies that he was going approximately 30 miles per hour, but could not recover when he hit the bank and the truck was sucked into the ditch.

Cook County Ambulance was paged, but Love and his passenger refused medical treatment and the ambulance was cancelled.

Because of heavy snow, a tow was not available. Lake Country Towing arrived the next day, February 21 at about 2:30 p.m. to remove the overturned truck. The Hovland STOP team assisted with traffic control, diverting traffic from Highway 61 to Cascade Beach Road while another tanker truck arrived to empty the contents of the overturned tanker so it could be righted and removed from the ditch. According to Cook County Law Enforcement, the tanker was carrying a “mild fertilizer.”
