Bryann Bockovich of Grand Marais bravely joined some friends last year in the Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics in Duluth. Asked last year if she would do it again, Bockovich enthusiastically replied yes. She jumped in the freezing cold lake—twice now—for a very good reason, in support of Special Olympic bowler Holli McClellan.
Bockovich was part of team “Holli’s Hope,” put together by Holli’s mom, Linda McClellan of Elk River, MN. Joining McClellan and Bockovich in fundraising and plunging was Miriam Howton.
Polar Bear Plunge participants must raise a minimum of $75 for the strangely coveted honor of jumping into the lake in the middle of the winter. The Holli’s Hope team did more than that, they raised almost $2,000.
The team took the plunge into Pleasant Lake in St. Cloud on February 16, 2013.
The Polar Bear Plunge—presented by Minnesota law enforcement as part of the year-round Law Enforcement Torch Run® events to benefit Special Olympics—is a unique opportunity for individuals, organizations and businesses to support Special Olympics athletes by jumping into frigid Minnesota waters. It consists of 16 different events that take place across Minnesota during the coldest months of the year. From January through March, the Polar Bear Plunge crew travels around the state to 16 different communities with one goal in mind: raise funds for Special Olympics Minnesota!
Overall the St. Cloud event raised $165,000 for Special Olympics.
