Take a Kid Fishing makes a big splash with kids

It was a great day to be fishing on Saturday, June 9, whether that was from shore or in a boat. Kids spent the morning with their parents and workers from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Cook County Soil and Water and Cook County AIS, who were on hand to assist and entertain.

The annual Take A Kid Fishing day held Saturday, June 9 at Mink Lake turned out great for the 30 people who attended.

The event takes place during the annual Take A Kid Fishing Weekend hosted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR). In Cook County, it is a collaborative effort with the United States Forest Service (USFS), Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR), Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), and Cook County Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS).

This year a grant from Arrowhead Cooperative also helped to pay for the event.

During the day kids and parents went on a boat to fish, children made fish prints, families learned about aquatic invasive species, kids received goodie bags, and families had a picnic lunch.

The morning was filled with fish, smiles, families and fun. Maybe the biggest smile of all came from Salomon Ramey, who caught the biggest fish of the day.
