It was a beautiful Saturday morning, June 11 at Kimball Lake and Mink Lake. The sun was out and the bugs were few. The United States Forest Service (USFS), Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR), and Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District (Cook SWCD) collaborated for the revival of “Take a Kid Fishing Day” in Cook County. The weekend is the annual MN DNR weekend where adults can take a kid fishing without a fishing license.
It was a great morning. Six families came to fish for the morning. The MN DNR took out families on boats on Kimball Lake and USFS staff assisted families at the fishing piers on Mink Lake. Youth ages 18 months and up were pulling out fish left and right from the boats.
For those waiting to fish, MinnAqua was there with fish related activities and the Cook County Aquatic Invasive Species coordinator was educating about aquatic invaders.
A picnic lunch was provided for families after they were done fishing.
Ilena Berg of Cook County Soil and Water was one of the coordinators of the events. She said, “Thank you to all the families who attended the event. Thank you also to the following sponsors, Solbakken Resort, Coldwater Foundation, Buck’s Hardware Hank and the Clean Water Land and Legacy Fund.”
