Grand Marais has already been busy this spring, but nothing like it will be after this weekend and here on out until the leaves hit the ground. Say goodbye to short checkout lines and fast service as the town is flooded with tourists here to enjoy the stunning beauty of Lake Superior and the fascinating communities scattered along the North Shore’s scenic Highway 61.
Many Grand Marais locals have come to avoid their beloved city during certain popular events, and the fireworks celebration is one of them. It has been shoulder to shoulder along the beach for as far as an eye can see the last couple of years. Fireworks light up the sky above the harbor exposing hundreds of spectators lined along the shore. I wonder, “Where are all of these people staying?” I did notice a lot of Ontario license plates, or rather licence plates, in the Coast Guard parking lot, but it amazes me how many people are visiting Grand Marais.
We are, after all, the coolest town in the nation or universe, or something like that and it makes sense why so many people are attracted to this little community on a big lake. Grand Marais thrives on tourism and this is just the beginning.
