T-Mobile cell service live on Grand Portage tower

Cell phone service just improved in the Grand Portage area.

Last week T-Mobile 4G service went live, with coverage expected to be comparable to the existing AT&T coverage footprint. Coverage will also be supplemented from the Hovland tower in the Reservation River area.

The T-Mobile 4G provider is hosted on a county owned and -managed tower on Grand Portageowned land. Under an agreement the property is leased to the county for communication tower purposes through the Grand Portage Land Use Committee.

The county is also engaged in two more East End cellular service projects involving Verizon. If all goes as planned Verizon should go live in Grand Portage and Hovland sometime this year.

“Cook County is continually working to manage our tower infrastructure to maximize public safety and citizen services while minimizing the impact on our natural environment,” said Valerie Marsco, Cook County director of Emergency Management and Public Information.

Cook County owns and manages 11 towers across the county.
