When the building burned that housed Sydney’s Frozen Custard & Wood Fired Pizza this April, it looked like it would be a long summer with no frozen custard, Vienna hot dogs, gyros, salads, sundaes, etc. But owner Bruce Block has come up with a new version of Sydney’s. Bruce has leased the old Joynes parking lot and is installing a temporary structure to house his business. He expects to be open July 1st and have the same menu as Sydney’s.

That includes his wood-fired pizzas.

“We will be here for two summers,” Bruce said. After that, he will return to his former site at 14 Broadway Avenue in Grand Marais near the Coast Guard station.

Bruce said he is going to rebuild the restaurant and use the packet SS America as his theme for the structure. Built-in 1898, the SS America transported passengers, mail, and packages along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Unfortunately, it sank off the shore of Isle Royale in 1926.
