The summer of 2012 has been an exceptional one! The residents at North Shore Care Center have spent a lot of time outdoors on the patios for picnics, gardening, games, and other activities— and were only rained out once!
Summer went by quickly, as usual, but we will still have our Labor Day weekend picnic and September outings to look forward to. There will be lunch at the Harbor Light, a shopping trip, and some leaf tour trips—with stops at the D.Q.
September is back to school month, the autumnal equinox, and also National Apple Month, Harvest Month, and Honey Month. We will be cooking and baking with apples and harvesting the rest of the veggies from our garden.
Later in the month there will be a presentation by Mark Ditmanson about one of his favorite hobbies—beekeeping. We can’t wait to eat local honey.
The monthly birthday party will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 12 at 3 p.m. with piano music and sing-along by Laura Laky. There will be cake and ice cream for residents and families to honor Irene Leng and Gerri Futterer.
The Lioness Club will begin hosting their afternoon socials on the third Saturdays of the month again on September 15. There will be special desserts and music for everyone at 3 p.m.
September 22 may be the first day of fall, but it is also National Centenarian Day. There are two residents over the age of 100—Bertha Toftey and Irene Leng. There will be cake and ice cream at lunchtime to celebrate our centenarians.
The music lineup in September will include Al Fuller & Friends on Tuesday nights, Susan Scherer on Wednesday nights, and Myron Bursheim on Sunday afternoons. The band Portage will perform their classic country music the last Saturday of the month on September 29 starting at 6:30 p.m. As always, families and community members are welcome to join in the fun.
The residents are very grateful to the Order of Eastern Star Emera Chapter No. 160 for their generous donation to the activities/entertainment fund.
Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers who helped make our summer activities possible. A special thank you to the student volunteers from the Incredible Exchange Program at ISD 166—Jaymee Dossey, Laura Foster, Cedric Rock, and Isak Terrill. They were great helpers with the staff and elders and each one of them completed their 50-hour contracts. Good job, kids!
