The Minneapolis Star & Tribune’s Frozen Pizza Bracket contest doesn’t have the drama say of the Miracle on Ice game when the U.S. beat the Russians in the 1980 Olympics, but it’s still exciting and gives us folks up north something to cheer about.

To start with, Sven & Ole’s frozen pizza was ranked 12th out of 16 frozen pizzas selected for the contest. That ranking didn’t bode well for our hometown champions, but it spurred on our Scandinavian pizza makers.

In matchups, there is always a favorite and an underdog. Joe Namath’s Jets versus Johnny Unitas’s Baltimore Colts. Coe versus Ovett. Clay versus Liston. Serena Williams vs. Venus Williams. Seabiscuit versus Secretariat. Nicklaus versus Palmer. Wile E. Coyote versus the Roadrunner.

And, so looms another rivalry. It’s a matchup between Sven & Ole’s frozen pizza versus Haggies frozen pizza.

And while the online voting ended this past Wednesday, we won’t know who won until April 6, 2020.

Will Sven’s rise like its’ thick crust pizza and top Heggies in the online vote? Or will Heggies edge out our champions by the thinnest of margins, the width of a piece of pepperoni?

According to Star & Tribune writer Sharyn Jackson in Round One, dubbed the Saucy Sixteen, Sven & Ole’s “surprised St. Paul when it beat No. 5 Wicked Pizza Co. by 52 points, while Heggies Pizza defeated Schwan’s Company’s Tony’s pizza by 70 points.

Round Two, called the Easy-Cheesy Eight, pitted Sven’s against No 4 Bellaltoria, which got shown the “doora” after the votes were counted. Meanwhile, Heggies edged Lotzza Motzza.

That brought the competition to the Freezer- Case Four. Sven & Ole’s was pitted against the top seed Mucci’s who crumbled under pressure and fell after Sven’s garnered 64 percent of the vote.

As good as Sven’s did, Heggies drew 80 percent of the vote against the St. Paul-born restaurant chain Davanni’s.

So who will win? With no sports to watch, not counting re-runs of Arnold Palmer taking on a young Jack Nicklaus, or Casius Clay knocking out Sonny Liston with a phantom punch or any Super bowl game which always stings true Vikings’ fans, we can always keep our fingers crossed for Sven & Ole’s Pizza to take home the tastiest pie contest.

Win or lose, we can always watch sport’s reruns with a nice slice of Sven & Ole’s Pizza to cheer us up.
