Surbaugh finishes second at Moose Mountain Invitational



Junior Will Surbaugh led the Cook County-Silver Bay ski boys’ alpine ski team to a second place team finish in the Moose Mountain Invitation held on Thursday, Jan. 10 at Lutsen Mountains.

Brainerd won the team title with a score of 183. Cook County- Silver Bay had 174.5; Hibbing, 162; Virginia Area, 159; Cloquet-Esko- Carlton, 136; Duluth East, 153; Hermantown, 124; and Marshall, 118.

Surbaugh’s time was 1:11.82; Hermantown’s Jack Borash was the boys’ winner with a time of 1:10.48.

Cy Oberholtzer also had a great race. Cy tied for sixth place with a time of 1:17.04.

Girls’ results

Elsa Lunde was the top girl skiers for CCSB with her ninth place finish. No other CCSB skier finished in the top 15.

Ashley Wineberg of Hermantown was the girls’ winner with a time of 1:07.8. She was five seconds faster than second place finisher Kate Thickens of Marshall.

Brainerd won the team title with 182 points.

Finishing in order behind Brainerd was Duluth East, 153; Hibbing, 139; Virginia Area, 114; Hermantown, 108; Cook County- Silver Bay, 82; and Cloquet-Esko- Carlton, 92.

The 7A Section meet will be held on February 5 at Giants Ridge. Skiers who qualify will attend the State meet on Feb. 13 which will also be held at Giants Ridge.
