This is a letter of explanation, apology and encouragement regarding the [ISD 166] school board’s decision to support tennis as a varsity sport this next school year.
I voted “nay” because I was concerned that public perception would have a negative impact on the upcoming referendum. Also, I believed a oneyear delay for this varsity status would have minimal negative impact for student tennis players (All current players would have at least one year varsity competition before graduation.).
I am grateful that Eric Kemp added to the motion the contingency of a contract between the school district and the [Cook County] Tennis Association to clarify and establish complete financial support by the tennis association for this new varsity sport.
I apologize to the tennis association and players if any think I don’t appreciate the lifelong benefits of tennis. I was still contemplating my decision when my three fellow board members voted “yes” to the motion. Rather than not voting I stayed with my original argument, but I will support, as I should, the majority decision. And, as mentioned above, I am grateful for the contract contingency.
I apologize to any members of the public who might feel insulted that I didn’t give them enough credit to move beyond perception to learning the facts.
Finally, I encourage all community members to continue working in a positive, respectful manner with this school board to make the best possible decisions for our students in a difficult time. We may have some spirited discussions, but we’ll find strength in working together for our students’ success.
