The in-person Gunflint Trail Canoe Races and Mid-Trail Annual Quilt Raffle & Auction will not be held again this summer. Without these fundraisers the Gunflint Trail Fire Department (GTFD), a 501(c) 3 non-profit, faces a substantial financial shortfall. To help make up for these events, The Friends of Gunflint Trail Fire Department residents’ group has several online fund-raising activities scheduled throughout the summer.
Kicking off the campaign is an online offer to purchase official “Gunflint Trail Summer 2021” T-Shirts and Masks. This element of the overall fundraising campaign ends June 28.
Shirts and masks may be ordered at: www.customink.com/fundraising/GTFDsummerfun21
Two great raffles are also planned by the group. For just $10 per ticket, you have an opportunity to win a Solera-120 by Current Designs kayak, perfect for kids and adults. Durable for rocks or beaches, it’s the perfect kayak for our Gunflint Trail lakes. Or you might win a handmade and queen-sized “Gunflint Pines” quilt from the Gunflint Trail Quilters. This is a true treasure that will fill your cabin or home with fond Gunflint Trail memories for generations to come. Drawing will be August 4, 2021. The kayak will be on display at the Poplar Haus from June 20 through July and the quilt will be displayed at Trail Center the last three weekends in July. Raffle tickets will be sold at these locations or you may email ticket requests to Carol Berg (carolyberg@gmail.com) or Chad Kieper (chadkieper@gmail.com).
An online auction is also planned by the fundraising committee. Auction items are being gathered now, so if you have higher price quality items and experiences to donate or suggest for the online auction, please contact Patsy Coleman (pbcoleman529@gmail.com) by July 2, 2021. The online auction will be open for bidding on July 26 and close on August 4.
Direct donations can be made either on the Friends of the Gunflint Trail Fire Department GoFundMe website at charity. gofundme.com/ friendsofthegtfdfundraisersummer2021 or on the GTFD website anytime to express your support (www.gunflint911.org/donations.cfm).
If donating by check, please make it out to GTFD and mail to: Gunflint Trail Fire Dept, ATTN: Barb Tuttle, 7401 Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, MN 55604.
The Gunflint Trail Fire Department is essential to the safety of residents and visitors alike, often rescuing people from our lakes and woods as well as fighting wildfires that threaten this very special area on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The special events may have been canceled this summer but the work of the GTFD goes on. Join the Friends of The Gunflint Trail Fire Department, including Gunflint Lake Property Owners Association, Mid- Trail Property Owners Association, and others, in supporting our Fire Department volunteers.
