Are you concerned about the decreasing quality of life for Cook County residents? Have you noticed the stress that the employee shortage is putting on our workers and businesses? On our health care agencies and schools? You might already be aware that lack of affordable housing is a big factor. But did you know that there is something you can do to help with this problem?
I used to own a short-term rental unit in Grand Marais. I decided to support my community by making it long-term instead, and it actually turned out better for me! Charging reasonable monthly rates, I make almost as much as I would on a nightly rental. What I lost in income, I more than gained back by not cleaning an entire apartment and doing laundry several times a week. I don’t owe lodging or sales tax—less paperwork! And there are no zoning restrictions on who can rent long-term.
Not everyone is going to choose this, but if even a few owners would, it would help. You can even contact the business or agency of your choice and support them by renting to them or their workers. Let’s stop complaining and start making a difference!
