Superior National to open Canyon

The nine holes at Canyon are refurbished and will be open to the public on Thursday, September 7, said Heath Ekstrom, PGA Head Golf Professional at Superior National in Lutsen.

It will be a “soft” opening with Canyon open from Sept. 7 to October 1, Ekstrom said.

Once open, 18 holes will be played from Canyon to River, with Mountain designated for 9 holes of golf.

Play on Canyon could close on a daily basis, said Ekstrom, depending on course conditions.

The renovation of Canyon cost $4.6 million.

“We have invited golf architect Jeffrey Brauer, who designed the course, to come back. He might bring a national golf writer with him. We’ll see,” said Ekstrom, who added that former Superior National director Greg Leland would also be invited to come for the opening.

Some of the improvements to the gorgeous Canyon include white sand bunkers, five sets of tees, wider and directing fairways, environmentally and conservative irrigation system and larger, more friendly putting greens.

Canyon will close October 2 for the remainder of the season.
