Superior National should pay its own way

The various letters in the April 9th edition of the Cook County News-Herald regarding Superior National Golf Course were most interesting. However, the issue of who manages it is irrelevant. The real problem was pointed out by Mr. Berneking when he observed that the Cook County – Grand Marais Economic Development Authority

(EDA) had sought “…someone who can go to government entities in search of new funds…”

Unfortunately, those “new funds” come from the same old source: the taxpayer.

As Mr. and Mrs. Williams so correctly observed, “…SNL must pay its own way…”

I love golf and think it’s one of the finest sports in the world. One cannot

help but note that neither the PGA nor its members beg for government help in building or maintaining golf courses.

Given the current economic situation, the county has no business financing much of anything beyond the needs of public safety, health and education, and even these have their limits. Continuing to fund existing or new boondoggles for mainly recreational purposes, including the ever more costly “community center,” is inexcusable. If those who want these facilities believe they are necessary, they should pay for them and not continue stealing from the taxpayers.
