Superior National Golf Course important to county’s economy

The Superior National Golf Course is a great asset to the Cook County community. Beyond its beautiful setting, it is a very valuable economic asset.

Two years ago my wife and I built a cabin in Cook County. We used a local real estate agent and bought the land from a local resident. We used a local contractor and construction crew. We used a local excavator, local well driller, local lumber yards and our bank used a local title company and attorney. Our contractor hired local sub-contractors for all the plumbing, electrical, heating, concrete and dry wall work. During construction we stayed at local hotels and ate at local restaurants. Now we frequent local businesses such as Joynes Ben Franklin, Lake Superior Trading Post, Lutsen Mountains, Sivertson’s Gallery, etc. We use local service providers for snow plowing, tree removal and planting, and veterinarian care to name a few.

Over the last 18 months we have had visitors from seven states all of whom drop money while in the county. We have had visitors from the Twin Cities and Iowa to play golf at Superior National and spend dollars. We pay real estate taxes to the county. None of this would have occurred if the Superior Golf Course did not exist. It is unlikely that we would have built if there was not a quality golf course near by.

Our community should think carefully when analyzing the impact of the golf course on the county economy. I suspect that there are many part-time residents with a similar story to tell. Without this quality golf course in Cook County, the tax base, employment and businesses would suffer. This special asset should be maintained and should not be allowed to deteriorate further.

Respectfully and happy to be part of the Cook County community,
