North Shore residents have known for decades that Superior National at Lutsen Golf Course is an outstanding golf course. So it is no surprise to learn that Golf Digest named Superior National as Minnesota’s Best Municipal Golf Course in July 2009.
What makes the award even sweeter, according to Mike Larson of the Lutsen- Tofte Tourism Association (LTTA), is that the golf course had no idea the honor was to be bestowed until the July issue of Golf Digest hit the newsstands.
Larson said, “It’s not like the staff rolled out the red carpet and put on the lipstick knowing they were competing for a coveted ranking. What Golf Digest apparently experienced during their tour (probably like a secret shopper) clearly impressed their ranking team.”
Greg Leland, director of golf at Superior National, explained why he thinks the Lutsen course received accolades— its venue on the shores of Lake Superior and the foothills of the ancient Laurentian Mountains; its trilogy of ninehole courses, River, Mountain, and Canyon; and its location along the spectacular Poplar River.
Leland added that it is an honor to be recognized as a highly valuable, publicly owned asset of Cook County.
Superior National continues to improve its operations to benefit Cook County’s tourism based industry. Leland noted the new flag entryway, expanded cartpaths to provide for increased play in wet conditions, and the community interaction with the volunteer “Friends of Superior National” group.
“Thishonor is exciting and is an opportunity to be built on further and one that should make all our residents proud of this publicly owned business and recreational facility,” said Leland.
