Superior Lumber & Sports, on the east end of Grand Marais, is well-known as a one-stop shop for hardware needs for the home— building supplies, paint, lighting, windows and window coverings and more—but Superior Lumber owner Lyle Spry felt something was missing. The spacious second floor of the store, with its beautiful cabinet and countertop displays and assortment of mattresses, seemed to be missing something. Spry recently realized what would fit perfectly into that area of the store—furniture. After contemplating the idea of adding furniture to the Superior Lumber offerings and researching what the community needs, Spry decided to rearrange the upper level to serve as a consignment area for used furniture.
Spry said taking furniture on consignment would help two segments of the population— homeowners who purchase new furniture and want their used pieces out of the way and families seeking decent furniture at reasonable prices locally.
Spry said he knows there are options to sell furniture on-line, but that doesn’t help the home or cabin owner who wants their furniture out of the way immediately. He said it should be easier to sell gently used furniture when it is set up in a showroom and homeowners won’t have to open their homes to strangers.
Spry said he hopes that young families will take advantage of the store, which will be less expensive than the big box furniture stores in Duluth. “I know a lot of young people who can’t afford to buy brand new. I hope that we will be able to offer some nice gently used furniture.”
The details are still being finalized, but Lyle and his wife and co-worker, Laurie, are excited about the change. Laurie Spry said, “We have decided to downsize our flooring display to just the Laminate line and add carpet tiles. Those items, as well as the two cabinet lines we carry and the wide assortment of countertop options are a great way to keep it simple and segue into furniture.”
“This will be a nice area to shop,” said Laurie.
The plan is to accept decent used furniture, lighting and even artwork, on consignment for 90 days. After 90 days, if the furniture is not sold, the customer will have the option of taking the furniture back or Superior Lumber will deliver it to a charitable organization.
“I think this is something that Cook County has needed,” said Lyle. “I’m looking forward to offering this service at Superior Lumber.”
