Superior Hiking Trail closed for deer hunting season

Much of the Superior Hiking Trail will be closed during the firearms deer season, Nov. 7 – 22.

The trail will be closed from Rossini Road Trailhead west of Two Harbors to Sugarloaf Road (Highway 61 milepost 73) south of Schroeder; and from the Hovland Lakewalk (Highway 61 milepost 123) through Judge Magney State Park to the Arrowhead Trail Trailhead north of Hovland.

Superior Hiking Trail Association closes the trail when there is private land in a section or when a public land managing agency asks to close the trail.

Gooseberry, Split Rock Lighthouse, and Tettegouche state parks have a special firearms deer season so they will be open to the public on the lake side of the highway but closed to the public on the inland side. Temperance River State Park will be open to hunting above the gorge/waterfall areas and west along the Cross River. Cascade River State Park will be open to hunting above the waterfall area and west of the river, including Lookout Mountain. Judge Magney State Park will be open to hunting in all areas except the lake side of Highway 61 and in the campground.

The rest of the trail is open to hiking but SHTA discourages people from hiking on the trail during this two-week period. If you do hike on the trail, wear blaze orange as a safety precaution.

There is no firearms deer hunting in Jay Cooke State Park and the City of Duluth so these are good places to hike during the firearms season.
