Once again, the Superior Hiking Trail Association will sponsor group hikes in 2009. All hikes start at 10 a.m. rain or shine, and are free and open to the public.
• June 6, National Trails Day — Choose the long or short hike. Long hike, 7.4 miles, Skyline Parkway at Highland/Getchell to Enger Park. Beautiful forests and long stretches of ridgeline hiking overlooking Lake Superior. Meet at the parking lot at Enger Park. Short hike, 1.7 miles, Skyline Park at North 24th Avenue W to Enger Park. Thissection meanders through an old city park, below Enger Golf Course, through city tree plantations and Enger Park. Meet at the parking lot at Enger Park.
• Additional hikes are also planned for July 18, Aug. 22, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3.
Participants hike at their own pace, and someone is always designated the “sweep,” the last person on the hike to make sure no one is left behind.
The meeting locations listed are the ending points of the hike. To get to the starting point to begin the hike, SHTA uses a group shuttle. All of the people get in half of the cars and drive to the starting point, then everyone does the hike. At the end point, if your car is there, you will need to drive someone back to the starting point to pick up his or her car.
