Merger keeps competitive edge for last locally-owned fuel company
Superior Fuel and Harbor City Oil and Propane announce their companies’ merger on August 10, 2018. The two companies will now be operating as Superior Fuel.
“While the name has changed, rest assured that the service will remain the same,” said Mark Kolquist, president Harbor City Oil and Propane. “You can depend on Superior Fuel to exceed expectations and provide fair and honest pricing. You won’t notice much change at all. In fact, you will still see me in the office as I stay on board.”
Harbor City Oil and Propane has been owned and operated by the Kolquist family since the 1950s. However, an increase in competition from large national competitors, some multi-national and East Coast conglomerates, made it difficult to maintain a competitive edge. In a strategic move, the Kolquist family tapped Superior Fuel for the merger to continue to provide dependable service to the community.
Superior Fuel, founded in 2006, is now the region’s only locally-owned and operated energy provider. The company has 500,000 gallons of available storage with multiple supply points throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin. This volume allows the company to maintain customer supply at agreed-upon rates. During the supply crisis and skyrocketing prices of the 2013-2014 winter, Superior Fuel honored all pricing agreements because of this supply chain and their commitment to customers.
“We are proud to earn the trust of the Kolquist family and happy Mark will be staying on. He is a well-respected member of the community,” said Ryan Gunderson, president of Superior Fuel. “Our team is excited for the future, and we are proud to be the area’s locally-owned and operated energy provider.”
