102-mile race
Runners in the 102-mile Superior Fall Trail race ran through a night of rain followed by sun and not too warm temps as they made their way from Gooseberry Falls State Park to Caribou Highlands on the rocky, rutted, rugged Superior Hiking Trail.
Athletes in the 50 mile or 26.2-mile marathon had nice weather but some slick trails to contend with.
Jake Hegge, 31, of Onalaska, Wisconsin, placed first in the 102-mile race, covering the distance in 20 hours 45 minutes and two seconds.
Gretchen Metsa, 39 of Buhl, Minnesota, was the top women finisher. Gretchen placed fourth overall in a time of 24 hours six minutes and two seconds.
Jeff Miller of Silver Bay placed seventh to lead area finishers. Jeff ran the course in 24 hours 47 minutes and 36 seconds.
50 miles
Out of the 133 people who entered the 50 mile, Matthew Widenschink, 28, of Lacrosse, Wisconsin, beat all of them to the finish line, running 8 hours 46 minutes and seven seconds.
Margaret Ho, 33, of Onalaska, Wisconsin, placed first in the women’s division. Margaret finished in 10 hours 35 minutes and 42 seconds. Jane Asay, 39, Grand Marais, placed 50th overall and 10th in the women’s division with a time of 15 hours 30 minutes.
Marathon
There were 294 entrants in the rugged marathon.
Abbey Ewald, 28, took first place for women in the marathon. Abbey crossed the finish line in 4 hours 50 minutes and 40 seconds. Spencer Castillo, 27, of Northfield, Minnesota took first place in the men’s race with time of 3 hours 56 minutes and 43 seconds.
Chandler Litterest, 42, of Grand Marais, placed 11th with a time of 4 hours 38 minutes and 48 seconds. Former Grand Marais resident Kerrie Berg, 43, now living in Bemidji, placed second for the women with a time of 4 hours 59 minutes and 58 seconds.
Erin Altemus, 44, Grand Marais, placed 177 in the marathon crossing the finish line in 7 hours 30 minutes and 8 seconds.
The race(s) are organized by Rocksteady Running and directed by John Storkamp.
There were 945 registered runners taking part and 345 volunteers—most coming from the Twin Cities or Duluth area—helped put on the event
The race began at Gooseberry Falls State Park on Friday, September 9 and ended at Caribou Highlands in Lutsen. Runners had 36 hours to finish the 100-mile event.
