If you want to see what super fit people look like, go and watch some of the three trail races taking place this weekend in the west end of Cook County. Some 945 runners from five countries, 39 states and 202 Minnesota cities will gather to take part in the Superior 102-, 50- or 26.2-mile trail races on September 9 and 10.

Started in 1991 the Superior Fall races are considered some of the most difficult trail races to run because of the hilly, rugged endless up and down of the Superior Hiking Trail.

This year there are 283 entrants in the grueling 102- mile race, 230 runners in the equally grueling 50-mile and 432 folks signed up to run the marathon.

The 102-mile race will start at Gooseberry State Park on Friday at 7:50 A.m. The runners will finish sometime the next day at Caribou Highlands in Lutsen. All of the races are point-to-point and end at Caribou Highlands.

Superior Trail Races are organized by Rocksteady Running and directed by John Storkamp.

All runners who fish the 102-mile race before the 38-hour cutoff will receive a buckle and a wood medal. First time finishers will also receive a Superior 100 hooded finishers sweatshirt.
