While no records were set in any of the three Superior Trail races held last weekend, Sept. 6-7, on the Superior Hiking Trail, the runners had nice weather and dry trails to help them as they navigated their way up and down the rigorous, rocky, twisty, tough terrain.
And while runners came from all across the country to take part in one of the most challenging trail races in the lower 48, none of the county’s ultra-distance trail runners competed in either the 100-mile, 50-mile or 26.2-mile races.
John Horns, age 51, placed first in the 100-mile race in 23:21:36, a 14:01 mile pace. Second place overall and first woman was April Cole of Hammond, Wisconsin, who ran 26:03:14, a 15:38 mile pace. Leah Johnson, 34 of Silver Bay, finished in 12th place with a time of 30:22:34 out of 87 finishers.
The 50-mile race winner was Kevin Ash, 40, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Ash crossed the line in 9:33:36. Tracy Hoeg, age 34, of Naestved, Denmark, was the first woman finisher in 12:04:06. She placed 13th out of 79 finishers.
Ben Kampf, 27, of Minneapolis placed first in the marathon with a winning time of 3:38:14, an 8:20 mile pace. Kris Hansen, age 44, from Afton, Minn. finished first among women and 7th overall with a 4:55:50 time, averaging 11:18 per mile.
All in all 177 runners finished the marathon.
