Superior 100-mile, 50-mile and marathon races held

Hot, humid wet conditions saw a field of 217 starters fall to 138 finishers at the rugged Superior Trail 100-mile race held September 9-10.

The race began at Gooseberry Falls State Park on Friday, September 9 and ended at Caribou Highlands in Lutsen. Runners had 36 hours to finish the 100-mile event.

Winnipeg’s Mallory Richards won the women’s race for the third year in a row, crossing the line in 23 hours, 51 minutes and setting a new course record. Mallory placed fifth overall in the field.

Frank Pipp of Longmont, Colorado, placed first overall in 20 hours, 23 minutes and 15 seconds.

The 50-mile and marathon runners set off Saturday, with 125 runners in the 50-miler and 263 starters in the marathon (26.2 miles). While there were runners from 33 states and four countries taking part, and runners from nearby Silver Bay and Thunder Bay entered, no Cook County runners took part in these races.
