Sunny days

It is funny when things just seem to work themselves out. The recent sunshine could not have had better timing for those last minute projects.

Deer hunters had some beautiful weather for sitting in the stands with temperatures reaching the mid fifties up the Trail. I heard reports of deer being very active on Saturday and a lot of smaller does running around. The few hunters I spoke with had not seen any true trophies, but passed up some respectable sixes.

My current job has had me running to town every morning at five a.m. and I have only seen one buck in the past two weeks. It was a four-pointer and he was already running when I came around the corner. Thiswarm weather will have them moving around a lot.

It is now day four of this year’s rifle season and I have still not heard a shot fired up here. Of course I was not home much this week, but my relatives were here the entire weekend and they did not hear a shot either. During last year’s rifle season, it sounded like the Fourth of July. This year— nothing.

The road construction seems to be complete on the Gunflint Trail and it looks really good. I cannot wait for the entire Gunflint Trail to look just like it. Last winter there were some speed bumps that could send you airborne if you were not paying attention. In fact, I had to replace the struts on the Saturn and a broken shock on the plow truck.

We have a little weasel living underneath our front deck that is becoming quite friendly. I do not believe in feeding the wildlife, but the little rascal got into my minnows last week and does not seem to want to leave. I was a little relieved to see that he was still alive since my minnows had been heavily salted and preserved for ice fishing, so he is probably a little dehydrated. He is completely white now and no longer camouflaged like he was a few weeks ago.

The smaller lakes were beginning to show some ice forming last week, but this warm weather took care of that. If I had not winterized my boat already it would have been nice to get out one more time. However, the trip we took to Isle Royale two weeks ago was good enough for me. Thatwas a great way to end an open water season and I hope to do it every year. The trout and the weather cooperated and you just cannot ask for a prettier place!
