Boats floating on the wave, crows squawking in the trees, gulls lingering in the air, some perched on the rocks, curiously seeking to find out why people are gathering. Is it to watch the water lap the shoreline? Is it visitors walking to see Father Baraga’s Cross?

Occasionally they hear melodic sounds from this group of people. What are they doing? It is early and only 8 a.m. Oh, look, people are gathered for a worship service.

Zoar Lutheran Church conducts an 8 a.m. 35-minute Sunday morning service at Father Baraga’s Cross on the Lake Superior shore in Schroeder. Those who participate arrive in their outdoor clothes from hiking shorts to jeans, and many don hooded sweatshirts enjoying whatever the day prescribes. Campers and cabin dwellers say it is a fixture of their Lake Superior vacation experience each year. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed. You might even hear some laughter and humor about the setting. Or perhaps feel an experience similar to the time of Jesus and those who listened to his message.

At 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 31 (please note change in time), Zoar Lutheran Church invites you to experience this out-of-doors atmosphere and attend worship at Father Baraga’s Cross. The time has been changed in order to accommodate both the 8 and 9 o’clock scheduled worship times. All congregates will gather for one worship time at the Father Baraga Cross.

BYOC (bring your own chair or cushion) and join Zoar Lutheran on Sunday, July 31 at the Father Baraga’s Cross, and each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. through Labor Day.
