Eighty-plus local kids participated in the after-school tennis program, having a great time learning new skills. There is another opportunity for fun on the courts with the USTA/ National Junior Tennis League this summer with the Cook County Tennis Association.
USTA Jr. Team Tennis offers the opportunity to play organized matches against players of similar age and ability in a friendly atmosphere. The QuickStart play format will be used for players, ages 10 and under. John Muus is the program director/instructor for the first three divisions (Grades K – 6). Tim Scannell will be the lead instructor for the Stars & Stripes Divisions (Grades 7 – 12). The activities take place at the community tennis courts in Grand Marais.
Interested youths, ages 5 – 18 are invited to register for the summer program, which will be held June 19 – July 19, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the following times: QuickStart (8 & Under) Division 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. QuickStart (10 & Under) Division 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Jr. Stars Division (going into Gr. 6) 11:00 – Noon Stars & Stripes Divisions (Gr. 7 – 12) Tues. & Wed., 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and Sunday, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
The fee is $30 and some scholarships are available. Participants receive a T-shirt and tennis balls are provided. Racquets are available, but if players have their own tennis racquet, they are asked to bring it. For more information contact John Muus at 387-2198 or jcmuus@boreal.org.
