Attorney Carleton R. “Tex” Hoy, a summertime resident of Devil’s Track Lake, was honored by the South Dakota Law Review, a professional journal, at an annual wine tasting event October 18, 2011 at Shriver’s Square in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
The South Dakota Law Review is published by the University of South Dakota School of Law.
According to University of South Dakota School of Law Interim Dean Thomas E. Geu, esq., “The law school has produced the leaders of the South Dakota legal system as well as opening opportunities in law and business for its students for over a century. The Law Review is an important component of the educational experience of the law school.
“…Carleton R. ‘Tex’ Hoy was a member of the first South Dakota Law Review Board and was president of the Law Student Bar Association. …Tex has been a leader in the South Dakota legal community since law school.
“…The law school is honored to have the opportunity, through the Law Review, to recognize Tex Hoy for his long and storied contributions to law and justice across South Dakota and beyond.”
South Dakota Law Review Volume 57 Editor-in-Chief Ellie Murphy wrote, “… I am pleased to welcome you to the sixth annual Wine Review. Tonight, we are honored to acknowledge one of the most legendary trial lawyers in the state, Mr. Carleton R. ‘Tex’ Hoy. Mr. Hoy was selected in recognition of his longstanding commitment to the South Dakota legal community.”
The biographical sketch in the event program states:
“Carleton R. ‘Tex’ Hoy was born in Sioux City, Iowa, on December 12, 1928. Mr. Hoy grew up in Vermillion, South Dakota, and assumed he would become a coach, just like his father.
“Mr. Hoy obtained a B.S. in business administration from the University of South Dakota in 1950. He then spent one year in Korea as an infantry platoon leader. While in Korea, Mr. Hoy received a letter from his mother, asking him to consider attending law school. Upon his return from Korea, Mr. Hoy went to Des Moines, Iowa, where he met his future wife, Joan.
“In the fall of 1953, Mr. Hoy began his legal education at the University of South Dakota. …After graduating from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1956 [and being admitted to the bar], U.S. District Judge George T. Mickelson selected Mr. Hoy as the District of South Dakota’s first law clerk. In 1957, Mr. Hoy joined the Davenport, Evans, Hurwitz & Smith law firm, where he spent 30 years as a trial lawyer.
“Mr. Hoy and his son, James, then established the Hoy & Hoy law firm in 1987. In 2004, Mr. Hoy and James merged their practice with middle son, Scott Hoy, into the Hoy Trial Lawyers law firm, where Tex continues to practice in the areas or medical malpractice, personal injury, and property damage.
“Tex Hoy was honored with the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. He is a former president of the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association, past president of the South Dakota State Bar, and past president of the International Society of Barristers. Tex Hoy is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and a fellow in the International Academy of Trial Lawyers. Tex is also a member of the Second Judicial Circuit and the American Bar Association.
“…Tex Hoy and his wife have three sons, Tom (Cindy), Scott (Char), and James (Paula), five grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren.
“In Mr. Hoy’s words, ‘It’s been quite a ride.’”
Tex plays a lot of tennis in Cook County and is an active supporter of the Cook County Tennis Association. He and Joan divide their time between Grand Marais, Sioux Falls, and Naples, Florida.
About receiving the South Dakota Law Review honor, Tex told the News-Herald, “The atmosphere was a bit heady, but I was careful not to inhale very deeply.”
