Multitudes of children carpeted the library lawn on Tuesday, August 13, chasing bubbles, playing ping pong, laughing, running, frolicking about on a beautiful, joy-filled day.

At noon, library director Steve Harsin said there were at least 150 people attending the fifth annual Grand Marais Public Library summer picnic. The picnic was held to celebrate the end of summer and the summer reading program.

The event was open to everyone in the community—even passerby visitors to the area who were encouraged to stop for a bite to eat—who came to support the kids who participated over the summer, and to encourage kids’ continued interest in reading.

The celebration started with interactive stories for families by author and storyteller Rose Arrowsmith DeCoux. A picnic lunch was provided by Gene’s IGA, Johnson’s Foods and the Cook County Whole Foods Co-op. Harsin asked attendees to thank each of the grocery stores who graciously provided the meal.
