The Grand Marais Public Library had a great summer with 91 kids ranging from preschoolers to teens in the “Paws to Read” program. Books, Frisbees, finger puppets and masks were just some of the prizes for reaching reading goals, thanks to the support of local businesses. For those reaching 50 days of reading a Blizzard treat at the Grand Marais Dairy Queen was a cool surprise.
The hide-and-seek game of “Where’s Rover” was a huge hit with the kids. Between 20 and 40 kids did their best each week to use the clues in a photo to determine where the stuffed dog, Rover, had gone. Prizes and treat coupons provided by Beth’s Fudge, Joynes Ben Franklin, Gunflint Mercantile, Sydney’s Frozen Custard, Java Moose, Cook County Whole Foods Co-op, Johnson’s Foods, Gene’s Foods, and Naniboujou Lodge, were a hit with the Rover winners as well as the Book Bingo achievers.
Nearly 200 kids took a chance at guessing how many doggie treats were in a big glass jar kept at the children’s services desk. The total was 369! Samantha Bolin, with a winning guess of 350, took home the treats and a new book. Thanks to Buck’s Hardware for the doggie treat donation!
Many kids also participated in the Design a Bookmark Contest. Winners were Teagan A. from Glencoe, Minnesota, Margaret Aiyenero from Middleton, Wisconsin, Martine R. from Hovland and Robin H. from Grand Marais. Winning bookmark designs can be found at the library. They have been such a hit with readers of all ages that the library has ordered more.
The older kids, 6th – 12th grades, read over 127 books. Cassie B. was the winner in the Kindle Fire drawing. A big thank you goes out to the Grand Marais State Bank for sponsoring the program, and also to Lance Johnson, whose generous donation supported a Best Book Review contest. Winner Robin H. took home $150. Amelia Roth won $100 and Sylvia Burka won $50. A big thank you to local author, Joan Drury, for judging the contest!
“It really was an extraordinary summer! Thanks to the generous support from local businesses, individuals and the Cook County Library Friends we had a great time at the library this summer!” said Library Director Steve Harsin.
