An end-of-summer celebration is planned for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 26 for those who participated in the library’s summer reading program.
Of course, said Grand Marais Library’s Patsy Ingebrigtsen, all are invited to the event on the library lawn which will include music, games, prizes and a picnic beginning with a “Musical Animals” children’s program followed by a prize drawing and picnic for all families with young children.
The music program was created to celebrate and enhance the stories enjoyed by the youngsters, said Ingebrigtsen, and the selections in the 45-minute program were chosen with several animals in mind. “We’ll hear from a butterfly, a busy bee and the duck from Peter and the Wolf,” Ingebrigtsen said.
Yvonne Caruthers (cello), Philis Anderson (oboe) and Gina Macy (flute) will perform for the “Musical Animals” event and possibly during the picnic afterwards. The picnic will begin at noon and feature food donated by IGA, Johnson’s Foods and the Whole Foods Co-op.
The day’s events will conclude with a grand prize drawing at 1 p.m. for the kids who participated in the “Read to the Rhythm” 50-day reading challenge, and a drawing for the teens who reached their goals.
“The kids have been so excited about the big drawing,” Ingebrigtsen said, explaining that program participants were given one chance for every 10 days of reading they did.
Options for prizes are tickets for a ride on the Hjördis, a YMCA birthday party, a YMCA youth session and a gift certificate at the Art Colony. There is also $250 in cash or gift certificate drawings for the teens, thanks to the generosity of Grand Marais State Bank. All of the prizes were donated.
“We have had a great summer!” said Ingebrigtsen. “Eighty-eight kids registered for the summer reading program, and everyone is invited to celebrate.”
