Summer going fast at Birch Grove

It has been a busy July and August on the West End. As always summer goes by way too fast.

July was filled with activity which included the Tofte 4th of July celebration. We hosted the Tofte Trek event which was a big hit. We served breakfast pizza from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. which involved preparing about 100 pizzas for the hungry race participants. There were people everywhere which is what we like to see!

The W.E. Pizza Night continues with much success. I have learned a new talent, typically spending Tuesdays with pizza dough up to my elbows and making sauce. This may not sound fun but it is all worthwhile for smiles, thank yous and much appreciation. Thank you to all who make the work involved joyous to me! Come and check it out on Wednesday nights from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. A $5 donation includes dough, sauce and cheese and a few toppings. Bring your own toppings to dress it up and have a pizza party under the pavilion.

Senior Lunch, also my special day, has wonderful food, smiles, chitterchatter and important news abounds in community room No. 1. Check the Boreal Community Calendar for the menu, which is always incredible, Barb Merritt is fantastic and always prepares wonderful, balanced and yummy meals! Put it on your calendar, Wednesdays 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.

W.E. Fit Exercise is available Monday, Tuesday and Friday (Zumba) 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The exercise room (community room No. 2) is available for use Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come in and check the available equipment and DVDs. If there are any instructors out there who would like to assist us, please give me a call.

Pickle Ball is going strong, the outdoor court has been the place of action on the beautiful days and indoor gym if needed. Please check with Carroll Peterson for more information or scheduling: carrollpeterson@yahoo.com.

CSA is available every Friday (however long it lasts), with fresh vegetables from Round River Farms in Finland. We purchased two shares which we distribute out of community room No. 1. We have been getting a gorgeous selection of greens, carrots, cabbage, squash, cucumbers, etc. Every week is a nice surprise.

Cole’s IT Technical Support is available twice per month. Please call in regards to his schedule.

This is a free service (donations appreciated). Cole Bauer can assist you with your technical devices, software, and security.

Cook County has a vibrant and active community of elders. Each week we will offer Senior News to highlight our senior citizens. This week’s submission is about the Birch Grove Community Center in Tofte courtesy of Brenda Melin, program manager.
