Summer Fun at the Care Center

July 2nd marks the halfway point of the year – hard to believe. July is also National Picnic and Family Reunion Month, and the residents look forward to more visits from out of town family and friends. We welcome all to join in the activities here at the Care Center during their visits.

Special thanks to Sharon Bloomquist for making some delicious homemade baked beans for our Hillbilly Hoe Down Picnic held on June 21. The residents really enjoyed them along with hot dogs from the grill, and all the sides too – served on tin plates! Hoe Down Happy Hour and Hoe Down Bingo were also part the special event.

June 26 was an exciting day at the Care Center as our first household was opened for occupancy. Residents were able to experience their spacious new living and kitchen area, as well as several residents relocating to their new rooms. Thanks to family members and staff who helped with the transition. We look forward to settling into our new space, and doing some cooking once again.

How can you brighten your day? Rolf Skrien found a way by sharing some time with this big fuzzy bear ”Bjorn.” Bjorn, who never missed a stuffed bear meal, is almost bigger than Rolf.

We will have the grill going again on Independence Day for a 4th of July picnic with all the fixings. The residents will also be celebrating other fun events in July such as Blueberry Muffin Day, Peach Ice Cream Day, and National Fudge Sundae Day. We’ll go south of the border during “Hilja’s Happy Hour” on July 24 to celebrate National Tequila Day. There will be margaritas and Mexican snacks served, along with some Mexican music and games.

The elders welcome student volunteer Grace Nonnemacher from the Incredible Exchange Program, who started working with the Activity Department in June. It is always a delight to have students of all ages visit and partake in activities with the residents.

The residents are hoping for a sunny day on July 6 when we will spend some time at Harbor Park to enjoy the lake, boats, seagulls, and tourists, while snacking on their favorite donut from the Donut Shop. Another outing is also planned for July 20 for lunch and visiting at the Senior Center.

The monthly birthday party will be held on July 12 at 3 p.m. We have five residents celebrating birthdays in July including Lu Pettijohn who will be turning 104! Cake and ice cream will be served, and Sherrie Lindskog will be here to play some great piano tunes.

There will be a lot of fun music in July. Marco Good will be bringing his musical talent to the Care Center on Saturday, July 8 at 2:30 p.m. On July 15 at 2 p.m., there will be some great accordion music with Betty Goettl. Betty will be visiting the area for a few days, and has graciously offered to come to the Care Center to play for the elders. We look forward to Laura Laky and her piano students playing for us on July 18 at 2:30 p.m. too. Other music this month features Myron Bursheim on Sundays, Al Fuller on Mondays, and Susan Scherer on Wednesdays.

Many thanks to the dedicated volunteers who continue to give their valuable time during these busy summer months.
