Summer is now full upon us at the Senior Center. Everyone is busy, busy! At press time, most of us are looking forward to Fisherman’s Picnic. During the Picnic we see many folks we haven’t seen in awhile, have some fun, see the bustle in town, maybe even have a fishburger. Many of us have family and other company coming home to visit. Take the time to soak up and appreciate the summer weather while it is still here!
We will be having a rummage sale at the Senior Center during Fisherman’s Picnic. Our hours will be Friday 10-6 and Saturday 9-4. We will also have a stand outside the Senior Center where we will be grilling brats with all the fixings available for sale. Please stop by either or both events and help support your local senior center.
Minnesota State Shutdown: We are all glad the state shutdown has now ended, even though we may not be pleased with how our government resolved the issues. During the shutdown, our dining budget assistance was cut. Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency (AEOA), which runs our dining program, allowed monies for our Meals-on-Wheels program only. We put our heads together and combined our efforts and were able to continue with our congregate dining program at the Senior Center for our daily lunch meal. We would like to thank the Cook County Council on Aging, the County Fair Board and all the folks dining here who made it possible. The council paid our cook Ann for the extra time and paid for all of the food. The folks dining here contributed an additional $1 for each of their meals to help defray some of the costs. The County Fair Board lent us a beautiful gas grill. We had fun doing some BBQ grilled food for lunches. Thanks to all!
Traveling seniors
Early in July a group of us travelled to Two Harbors for a fun shopping trip. We all enjoyed lunch at Culver’s.
On Monday, July 25, a group of adventurous travelers headed to Gunflint Lodge for a delicious walleye lunch and a scenic pontoon boat ride on Gunflint Lake. The lake was a little choppy and a few folks even took on a wave and got a little wet. Everyone was a good sport and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the trip!
In August, our bus will be traveling to Grand Portage twice, Wednesday, August 17 and Wednesday, August 31. The trip on Wednesday the 17th is an all-inclusive special treat and will include dinner and an evening boat cruise on Lake Superior. Participants will also receive $5 in free slot play and 3x points on all slot play. The trip on Wednesday, August 3 is free, thanks to bus sponsorship from Grand Portage Casino. You will also receive $5 free slot play plus 3x points on all slot play and also a certificate for $5 off an entrée at the restaurant. Reserve your spot by signing up at or calling the Senior Center at 387-2660.
We hope you will stop in soon and join us for lunch or any of our many activities. We look forward to seeing you! News from the “Brighter Side” of aging is provided by Kristen Anderson of the Grand Marais Senior Center. Kristen can be reached at (218) 387-2660 or via e-mail at CCCOA@boreal.org.
